In a world constantly buzzing with new health trends, wellness routines, and self-care tips, it’s easy to lose sight of what true wellness really means. As followers of Christ, we are called to view health, wellness, and body image through a different lens—the lens of God’s truth.

At the heart of overall well-being are four essential pillars: sleep, stress, strength, and steps. Each of these areas plays a critical role in helping you feel your best and live a vibrant, productive- styled life. Let’s dive into each one and explore simple, actionable ways to incorporate them into your daily routine.

Wellness begins in the soul

True wellness isn’t just about how we look or feel; it’s about the condition of our soul. Jesus said in Matthew 11:28-30, “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.”

In Him, we find rest—not the kind of rest that comes from a perfect night’s sleep, but the deep, soul-refreshing peace that comes from knowing we are loved, forgiven, and held by the Creator of the universe. This is the foundation of true wellness.

Sleep is often called the cornerstone of health, and for good reason. It’s the time when your body repairs itself, your brain processes information, and your energy is restored.

Why it matters: Poor sleep can affect everything from mood and memory to immunity and metabolism. Adults generally need 7-9 hours of quality sleep each night to function at their best.

Tips to improve your sleep:

  • Stick to a consistent sleep schedule, even on weekends.
  • Create a relaxing bedtime routine to signal your body that it’s time to wind down.
  • Keep your bedroom cool, dark, and quiet to optimize sleep quality.
  • Limit caffeine and screen time in the evening to avoid disrupting your natural sleep cycle.

Surrender not striving

One of the most exhausting aspects of modern wellness culture is the constant striving to achieve perfection—whether it’s a flawless morning routine or an ideal weight. But God calls us to surrender instead of strive.

Psalm 46:10 reminds us to “Be still, and know that I am God.” In that stillness, we discover that we don’t have to carry the weight of our wellness journey on our own. When we surrender our burdens to Him, He equips us with the strength and grace to live a life of balance and purpose.

Stress is an inevitable part of life, but unmanaged stress can wreak havoc on your physical and mental health. Learning to manage stress effectively is key to maintaining overall wellness.
  • Why it matters: Chronic stress can lead to issues like high blood pressure, anxiety, depression, and even weakened immunity. Managing stress isn’t about eliminating it entirely but rather finding healthy ways to cope.
  • Tips to manage stress:
  • Practice mindfulness or meditation to stay grounded in the present moment.
  • Prioritize self-care activities that bring you joy and relaxation.
  • Learn to say no and set healthy boundaries to avoid overcommitting yourself.
  • Exercise regularly, as physical activity is a proven stress reliever.

Caring for the temple

Our bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 6:19-20), and caring for them is an act of worship. Eating nourishing foods, exercising, and resting are not about vanity but stewardship. When we view wellness as a way to honor God with the body He has entrusted to us, it becomes a joyful act of obedience rather than a burdensome checklist.

1 Timothy 4:8 says, for while bodily training is of some value, godliness is of value in every way… Our spiritual health is important. Spending time in God’s Word, praying, and being in community with other believers strengthens our inner being and keeps our focus on what truly matters.

Strength isn’t just about lifting weights at the gym; it’s about building a resilient body that supports you in everyday life. Strength training improves bone density, boosts metabolism, and enhances functional fitness.

Why it matters: Strong muscles and bones help prevent injuries, improve posture, and maintain independence as you age.

Tips to build strength:

  • Incorporate strength training exercises into your routine 2-3 times per week.
  • Focus on compound movements like squats, push-ups, and rows that work multiple muscle groups.
  • Don’t be afraid to start small. Even bodyweight exercises can make a big difference.
  • Stay consistent, and gradually increase resistance or weights over time.

God’s grace in our imperfections

No matter how hard we try, we will never be perfect. We’ll have days when we miss our workout, skip our quiet time, or feel overwhelmed by stress. And that’s okay. God’s grace meets us in our imperfections.

2 Corinthians 12:9 says, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” True wellness is not about achieving a flawless routine; it’s about walking in the freedom and grace of Christ, knowing that His strength carries us when we fall short.

If you struggle with having the perfect workout or finding time to move your body, the most simple and yet effective way to support your body is by taking a walk.

Daily steps, like walking (zone 2 cardio), is one of the simplest and most effective ways to stay active. It’s not about hitting the gym for hours but about making movement a natural part of your day.

Why it matters: Regular physical activity improves cardiovascular health, boosts mood, and helps maintain a healthy weight. Walking, in particular, is low-impact and accessible for most people.

Tips to get your steps in:

  • Aim for 7,000-10,000 steps per day as a general guideline.
  • Take short walking breaks throughout the day, especially if you have a desk job.
  • Choose the stairs over the elevator or park further away from your destination.
  • Invite a friend for a walk to make it a social activity.

Living well for His glory

The four pillars of health — sleep, stress, strength, and steps — are not an end in themselves—these are a means to live well for God’s glory. When we care for our bodies, minds, and spirits, we are better equipped to love others, serve our communities, and fulfill the purposes God has for our lives.

So let’s pursue wellness, but let’s do it with God at the center. Let’s seek rest in His presence, surrender our striving, and steward our bodies and souls in a way that honors Him. In doing so, we’ll find a peace and wholeness that no self-help book or fitness trend could ever offer.

Take time to reflect on your wellness

  • Are you prioritizing rest in God over striving for perfection?
  • How can you view your wellness journey as an act of worship?
  • What steps can you take today to care for both your body and soul in a way that honors God?
